A good wig is an investment — and like any investment, it needs looking after. Whether you wear synthetic or human hair, proper cleaning and maintenance will keep your wig looking natural, feeling soft and lasting far longer. Here’s your complete care guide.
How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?
As a rule of thumb, wash your wig after every 8–12 wears, or sooner if you’ve used lots of styling product or been in smoky or dusty environments. Over-washing strips fibres and shortens lifespan, so only wash when it genuinely needs it — if it looks dull, feels sticky or smells less than fresh, it’s time.
Washing a Synthetic Wig
Fill a basin with cool water and add a capful of wig-specific or sulphate-free shampoo — never use regular shampoo, which is too harsh for synthetic fibres. Turn the wig inside out, submerge it and gently swish for a few minutes; don’t rub or twist. Rinse in clean cool water, then apply a light wig conditioner, avoiding the roots (conditioner can loosen knots). Rinse again and gently blot with a towel.
Key rule: never use hot water or heated styling tools on standard synthetic wigs — heat can permanently damage the fibres. (Heat-friendly synthetics are the exception; check the label.)
Washing a Human Hair Wig
Human hair wigs can be treated much like your own hair. Use lukewarm water and a sulphate-free shampoo, washing in a downward motion from roots to ends to avoid tangling. Rinse thoroughly, apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, and leave for a few minutes before rinsing. Because human hair wigs don’t receive natural oils from the scalp, deep-condition every few washes.
Detangling Without Damage
Always detangle before washing and after drying. Place the wig on a stand, hold the hair at the roots to avoid pulling on the cap, and work through tangles with a wide-tooth comb or wig brush, starting at the ends and moving upward. For stubborn knots, a little detangling spray works wonders. Never brush a wet wig aggressively — fibres are most fragile when damp.
Drying & Styling Tips
Air drying is best: place the wig on a stand away from direct heat and sunlight, and let it dry naturally to preserve its shape. If you must speed things up, use a cool blow-dryer setting. Human hair wigs can handle heated tools on low to medium heat with a heat protectant; for synthetic wigs, stick to finger-styling or steam for restyling.
Storing Your Wig Properly
Store wigs on a stand or mannequin head to maintain their shape, kept in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. For travel, turn the wig inside out, fold it in half and place it in a silk or satin bag. Never store a damp wig — make sure it’s completely dry first to prevent mildew and odours.
Extending Your Wig’s Life
Rotate between wigs if you wear them daily, minimise heat styling, and sleep in a satin bonnet or on a silk pillowcase if you wear your wig to bed. With good care, a synthetic wig can last 4–6 months of regular wear, while a quality human hair wig can last a year or more.
